Clean, fresh skin is incredibly beautiful, but washing your face isn’t actually enough to get there. Unclogging your pores calls for a more thorough and deeper cleansing. The good news is that all it takes is a commitment on your part, and a little time for self care.
Pore sizes and numbers differ dramatically, depending on gender, body area, and ethnicity. They, like many other traits, are mostly determined by heredity. Pores in oily skin are more likely to clog, allowing bacteria to grow causing whiteheads, blackheads, and papules. Of course, the goal is to clear your pores and allow oxygen to freely pass through them, preventing bacteria from causing issues.
Here are a few ways that you can try, from the comfort of your own home:
Effective Methods to Clean Your Pores
#1 Steam
Simply fill a bowl, halfway, with hot water. Cover your head with a towel and lower your face over the bowl, make sure to keep yourself at a distance that does not allow the steam to be too hot. To enhance the experience, add a few drops of peppermint oil to the water and gently breathe in. Tea Tree oil is another wonderful choice if you are prone to breakouts. Steaming time can be up to 15 minutes, and once again, be extra cautious when dealing with the hot water and steam.
#2 Lactic Acid
There are two forms of exfoliation, physical exfoliators and chemical exfoliators. Lactic acid is a type of alpha-hydroxy acid that is gentler on the skin than other natural, chemical, exfoliants like citric acid. It works wonders by removing dirt from within the pores and dissolving it. Greek yogurt, which has lactic acid enzymes that help break up dead skin cells, can also be very effective at mending clogged pores while being more gentle on the skin.

#3 Honey Masks and Lemon Masks
To remove pollutants, apply a few teaspoons of raw honey directly to your face, or mix a tablespoon of cinnamon or a tablespoon of yogurt with a teaspoon of olive oil. Lemon, which acts as a natural exfoliator, can be added to any of these masks, or you can simply apply a few drops directly to your face (make sure not to go into the sun with lemon on your face). Allow 10 minutes for it to sit on your face before removing it with warm water. These simple masks can be used three or more times per week as needed. However, lemon can be drying when applied directly to the skin, so make sure to put your hyaluronic serums and moisturizers on after.
#4 Baking Soda
Another simple mask to make at home is this one. Use two tablespoons of baking soda and a teaspoon of water for this pH balancing mask. It should be left on for 5 to 10 minutes before removing. Of course, as with other masks, a tablespoon of honey can be added to the mix.
#5 HydraFacial
HydraFacials use water pressure to open your pores and remove dead skin cells and debris. The HydraFacial is one of the most popular treatments currently. Capillaries in the skin and around pores, expand and contract in response to temperature changes. The blood vessels enlarge when the skin is hot, allowing more blood to flow to the cells. Note to self, this is why when the skin is cold it feels tighter and the pores appear to be smaller.
#6 Sugar Scrub
Regular scrubbing is normally a good idea, but scrubs may be harsh on sensitive skin, so sugar is an excellent substitute. In a simple recipe, blend two teaspoons of sugar with the juice of half a lemon and a little water. Combine all of the ingredients to make a thick paste, then gently massage it into your skin before washing it off.
